I remember the day when I told my family and close friends that I was leaving my secure 17 year career in Financial Services to become a Personal Trainer. 

"Personal Trainers don't earn very much money"

"You have a wife and 2 kids to think about"

"Have you lost it?"

I guess there were moments when I was waking up at 4:45am in the Summer of 2012 to go and train 5 ladies in a local park that I thought they might have been right.

I had a huge mortgage, 2 cars on finance and credit card bills mounting up on the back of debts I had accumulated while a previous business had failed. 

I wasn't earning enough money to cover my weekly shopping bill let alone pay for everything else. 

I just remember friends kept asking us to join them on meals out or weekends away and me just having this sick feeling in my stomach. 

I knew we couldn't afford to go, but I didn't want people to know how much we were struggling so I would just pay for everything on the credit card.

Everything became too much for me in the January of 2013.

The stress of the whole situation led to me having a lapse with a previous stomach condition and I ended up in hospital for a week. 

I was in agony and felt helpless. 

As I was lying there in a hospital bed in Northampton I had serious doubts about our future. I had doubts about the decisions I had made and felt irresponsible for gambling with my family's well being.

I have 3 booming fitness business that is still growing every month. 

We have 250+ members in our local ladies gym.

We have 60+ members in our local men's only semi private training studio.

We have 20+ online clients at any one time. 

We have 6 trainers that oversee the sessions. I don't run any sessions any more. I just focus on sales and marketing.

Facebook Ads is what happened!

I figured out how to use them.

I invested in world class experts to teach me how to get the most out of them (and continue to do so today)

When I first started I was relying on more traditional forms of marketing like networking, printing leaflets, ads in local newspaper and groupon.

In fact I remember spending over £1000 on getting leaflets designed, printed and then delivered to 10,000 homes near to the park I was training at. 

The result?

3 clients. 

I was running out of time and running out of space on my credit card.

I'd tried everything else so thought I might as well try these FB Ads as well. 

I put an ad in to be approved (not having a clue what I was doing) and then within 24 hours I had my first lead. Within 48 hours I had 4 leads. 

Believe it or not I used a before and after photo (no way you could do that now). But as I didn't have my own before and afters yet I just bought one off one of the image sites. 

But..

Without having a clue what I was doing and purely by accident I was getting leads. 

Just think what I could do if I actually learnt how to use these properly!

I'm not going to lie to you. It was really hard work at first.  A steep learning curve.

...but

I stuck with it.

You see I'm not a teckie - far from it. In fact some of my closest old school friends take the piss about what I now help others to do as at back in the day I couldn't even figure out how to 'copy and paste'

What I found infuriating though was that just as I had figured out how to do something like get an ad approved Facebook would change their policy.

Images that were approved were now getting declined. 

Then people that I knew were getting their ad accounts banned!!

I mean it went from one extreme to the other, and just felt like nothing was getting through. 

I knew that these ads were the fastest route to me growing a successful training business and allowing me to then have the lifestyle that I so desperately wanted. 

So I decided to invest.

...a lot of time and money

Into learning how to not only master these ads but also to stay ahead of the game when it comes to their advertising guidelines. 

I haven't looked back since. 

As soon as I made that decision my business quadrupled in size and income. 

After a really slow start to my business, once I got my marketing right I managed to do my first 12 month £100k.

This has since doubled again. 

At first I didn't have the confidence to get my own unit.

Don't get me wrong. I really wanted to, but I just couldn't stop thinking about the risks.

What if I couldn't pay the bills? What if I didn't grow and I was stuck on 40-50 members and overheads that were too high to cover?

This all changed though when I had 100% certainty in being able to generate quality leads within just 90 minutes of turning my ads on.
